As the youngest member of the First Things staff, I have been asked to give a youth perspective on the magazine’s fall fundraising campaign, which is currently underway.

I am an unpaid intern, even though I spend forty hours a week at the First Things offices. (My mom says the best childcare is a postliberal workplace.) I’m not complaining, but I am constantly hungry. We are a small nonprofit in the big city. Your donation will feed one hungry child for a year, or one hungry writer for a month.
About me:
name Hugh Schmitz
age 1 year
favorite food bananas
favorite song “Yes, We Have No Bananas”
favorite book “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”
favorite thing about First Things its efforts to restore sanity to the society that kids like me will have to grow up in; also, bananas

Just because my cheeks are the widest part of my body doesn’t mean I’m not starving. Starving for a strong witness to truth in the public square, such as First Things uniquely provides. There’s still time left to contribute to our campaign. Please help in any way you can!
